OLPC
In 2005 Nicholas Negroponte had a great idea: why not make a laptop computer for the children in developing nations and sell it for only $100. Well, the first examples of the OLPC (One Laptop per Child) are finally available.
The result is a truly low-cost portable PC, though of course its performance is in line with its price tag. The computer is based on the AMD processor and has 128 MB of RAM. There is no hard disk but there is a 512-MB Flash memory card (that can be upgraded to 1 GB). There are three USB ports and ports for a LAN connection. The notebook also features a video camera and a microphone. Perhaps the best part of the computer is its display, which works in color and in black and white. OLPC works on the Linux operating system.
Overall, it's a perfectly functional little computer that would probably find buyers if it were available even in the richest of countries.
