OpenOffice is the best free alternative to Microsoft Office as evidenced by its popularity with thousands of people downloading the suite daily.
OpenOffice includes Writer, a feature-rich text editor, as well as a spreadsheet program called Calc, a presentations program called Impress and a graphics program called Draw.
But that's not all. There's a math program for formulas and the possibility of saving your files as PDFs in just a click.
