outSSIDer
Trying to find a free Wi-Fi network can be a real pain. Fortunately, there are programs such as outSSIDer, which constantly scans for free networks and instantly connects you.
You don't need to configure anything. The search process is automatic and ongoing. You can even close your laptop lid and the program will notify you with a "ding dong" sound when a network has been found. Open networks are listed along with information on the strength of the signal. Just double click on the one you want if you haven't already been connected.
outSSIDer is light and doesn't take up a lot of system resources. The program only works on Windows. It's a freeware application but the developers are currently asking for donations.
